Explore Santa Susanna

Santa Susanna puts down its roots in the south of the Costa Brava. It’s got something for everyone, with its two kilometres of beaches, cobbled old town and rural surroundings. There’s plenty of history, too, including a string of 15th-century watchtowers which were built to protect the town from pirates. The Massif Montnegre national park, which is packed with cycling and hiking trails, is close by, as well.

When it comes to sunset, you’ve got a variety of options. In the town itself, you’re looking at leisurely evenings in one of the many restaurants on the palm-lined promenade – the eateries specialising in seafood come highly recommended.

A chain of three beaches brackets Santa Susanna, and each has its own speciality. The Platja de les Dunes is best for watersports, while the Platja de Llevant’s a winner for families. The Platja de les Caletes is the place to go for a bit of peace and quiet as it’s made up of lots of small coves divided up by rocks. All this is backed by a promenade where, alongside bars and restaurants, you’ll find a craft market stocked with the wares of local artisans.

Lloret De Mar

The resort of Lloret de Mar can be found just up the coast from Catalonia’s cosmopolitan capital, Barcelona. It used to be a bustling port along the Costa Brava, but these days the sailors have been replaced by sun-seeking holidaymakers. With some of the best beaches in north-east Spain, plus a load of lively clubs and bars, it’s easy to see why this place is so popular even for stag and hen parties.

The heart of the town is a mash-up of old and new, where neon-lit bars and fast-food outlets share the narrow streets with Catalan and Gothic-style buildings. Take a short stroll from the bustling seafront promenade, and you’ll come across the brightly-coloured Church of Santa Roma. Up on the cliffs, the ruins of an ancient castle look down on it all.

Margret De Mar

Malgrat de Mar is situated along Spain’s Costa Brava, in the northeast of the country. It’s right between two of the area’s most popular resorts, Calella and prime beach territory Lloret de Mar. As for the town itself, Malgrat de Mar is a mix of centuries-old buildings, and modern hotels that have set up camp along the shorefront.

Malgrat de Mar’s seaside scene is one of three parts. A trio of distinctive beaches stretch their way along the Costa Brava for more than four kilometres. And they all play a different role. You’ve got the popular one, the watersport-centric one, and the one that has a Blue Flag for its quality. Connecting them all is a waterfront promenade, which is lined with sea-view bars and every type of eatery imaginable.

When you want to venture out a little further from Malgrat de Mar, you’ve got plenty of options. There’s a waterpark nearby, and the ancient town of Girona is an easy drive away. Plus, the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia, Barcelona, is just an hour away. It means you’ve got iconic attractions, like the Sagrada Familia and the Camp Nou football stadium, within striking distance.
